Mighty Girl Mighty God series

Mighty Girl Mighty God series by Lucy Rycroft

Have you ever wondered why the children’s story books you can buy for your kids often only seem to feature the men of the Bible? Does God only use men? Or maybe it’s a cultural thing, God only used men back then

While that’s obviously not true from what we see in the Bible and what we know as adults from our experience, how can we show our daughters how to be a girl who lives radically, courageously, and passionately for Jesus if there are no good examples in scripture for them to follow? How do we demonstrate to our sons what incredible godly women are like and how they can partner with them to advance the gospel?

Enter the Mighty Girl Mighty God series! Lucy Rycroft has written a growing series of beautiful poems which tell the stories of these courageous women and their incredible acts of faith. The books are perfectly pitched for children aged 5-9 but our whole family love reading them. We happily read about David with our daughters so why not read about Esther with our sons! And I don’t just mean the stories of Esther and Ruth (although yep she’s done those!) But you can also find some of the lesser known female heroes of the Bible like Abigail, or Deborah and Jael delightfully retold too.

You’ve read to them about Abraham and Sarah, but have you told your kids about Hagar? They know about Joshua and Caleb, but what do they really know about Rahab’s story?

If we want our kids to grow up with a clearer picture of what God is like and how they can get involved in God’s big story then our kids need to balance their bookshelves with stories of both men and women being used by him throughout scripture.

“So God made a plan, and the plan was good -

He knew it would work, He knew that it would,

When God makes a plan, He uses His friends,

So God used Deborah to make amends.”

I know what you’re thinking, those stories aren’t very child friendly. Well the way Lucy tells them they are! These books are biblically accurate, culturally and historically grounded, accessible, easy to understand, and fun to read! The cadence of the poem flows naturally, there is repetition and humour, and we even get told how to pronounce the ancient names so we’re not left stumbling and stuttering while reading to our kids. And even more than that, the books show our kids how inclusive, loving and caring our God is, both to the unseen women of the Bible back then as well as to us here and now.

“Poor Hagar was used and abused on a whim.

Yet God made it clear she was precious to Him.

With no control or choice over her life,

God stuck right with her, and helped her in strife.

He knew Hagar’s feelings, and He sees yours too.

The God who sees and the God who stays true.

He shares in your joy and he wipes all your tears

The God who sees and the God who hears.”

If you’re looking for something new to read with your kids, something they’ve not heard before but tells them about the same radically loving, all-powerful, protective God, then you need to start reading these beautiful stories of the female heroes of the bible!
