The Story of Bridport Community Kitchen
Beacon Church’s Bridport Community Kitchen (BCK) began in 2018 with a clear and compassionate vision. They felt called by God to provide food for those facing homelessness, addiction, and isolation. What started without a formal space, with meals cooked at home and brought in, has grown into a ministry with a fully equipped kitchen serving 20–30 people every Wednesday and Friday.
From the beginning, the heart and vision behind Bridport Community Kitchen has been rooted in Isaiah 61:1, proclaiming good news to the poor, binding up the brokenhearted, and proclaiming freedom for the captives. That vision continues to shape everything they do.
More Than a Meal
While food is at the centre, Bridport Community Kitchen is about far more than what’s on the plate. It’s a place where people can access showers, use washing machines, and receive practical support with things like housing. Just as importantly, it’s a place of belonging for those who are often overlooked or alone. Seb shared that their mission is to meet both physical and spiritual needs, helping people come to know Jesus.
One story captures this beautifully. A man who once slept outside the building in a sleeping bag is now helping with kitchen washup duties. Through consistent care, support, and community, his life began to take a new direction.
Christmas is another powerful example. People from the local community and shops came together to donate turkeys and gift bags to those using the Bridport Community Kitchen, creating a sense of unity, dignity, and joy.
The wider community has also rallied around the kitchen in creative ways. A “Long Scarf” knitting initiative brought local knitters together with kitchen guests, raising over £2500 for the kitchen and ended up on ITV News!
A Ministry That Changes Everyone
The Community Kitchen has impacted more than just those who attend; it’s also transformed the church!
Seb shared that the church prays for BCK and that it has truly shaped their vision and values. Despite being a small congregation of around 25-30 people, Beacon Church has become a place that welcomes everyone, including those from complex and challenging backgrounds.
There have been encouraging moments of faith, too. On one Alpha course, a man involved in dealing drugs came along—and even invited someone he met on the street. Today, he still attends the kitchen, showing the ongoing impact of the relationship and community.
There have also been difficult moments. The team has walked through loss, particularly when members of the community have passed away due to illness, addiction, or mental health struggles. These experiences have deepened their compassion and strengthened their commitment to keep showing up.
An Unexpected Calling
Today, the kitchen is led by Terry, who began the role unexpectedly. While meeting a friend at a Waffle House in Axminster, he was suddenly asked to consider an interview that same afternoon. He said yes, and just hours later, he found himself sitting in the interview.
During that conversation, Terry said, “God put me here. I’m not here for me.” He was offered the role, and later realised it was an answer to a prayer he had prayed three months earlier.
One person who has deeply impacted Terry is Bobby. After a particularly difficult period in his life, Bobby had reached a point of hopelessness. Since then, Terry has walked alongside him—supporting him through probation, court, and everyday life, while consistently encouraging him to look forward with hope.
Terry shared: “We want to help as many people as we can—especially those who feel like they have no hope.” Through this job, Terry has been able to meet the community's practical needs, be a friend, and plant some seeds.
Commission’s Support
Commission has been able to support Bridport Community Kitchen both financially and relationally.
As part of the 2025 offering, funding was given to help support the ministry. But beyond finances, Seb highlighted the value of relationships and shared learning.
Events like the Leadership & Governance Day have strengthened both the church's and the kitchen’s leadership. Connections with other churches, such as Honiton, have also been invaluable, with training and support around areas like addiction.
Looking Ahead
The vision for the future is full of hope.
Seb would love to explore short-stay shelter pods and work more closely with more local agencies to provide even greater support.
At the heart of it all is a long-term vision:
“Ultimately, we don't want to have to exist; we don’t want people to need food provision. We want people to be standing on their own two feet, able to support themselves.”
There’s also a desire to be more present in the wider Bridport community, taking part in local events, festivals, and celebrations, and sharing the joy of Jesus in those spaces.
How You Can Be Part of the Story
The Community Kitchen continues to thrive through the support of others. Prayer remains at the centre of everything, and regular financial giving helps provide stability and plan for the future.
